"Copernicus": The year 2025 is shaping up to be the second or third hottest year

Brussels, December 9, 2017 – The European Union’s climate change service, Copernicus, said that 2025 is on track to be the second or third hottest year on record, ahead of most previous records, and may only be exceeded by 2024, which recorded an unprecedented rise in temperatures.

Copernicus confirmed in its monthly bulletin that the current year will likely complete the first three-year period in which the average temperature of the planet exceeds 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels between 1850 and 1900.

Samantha Burgess, the service’s climate strategy officer, said that these indicators are not just numbers, but rather reflect the accelerating pace of climate change, while the same year witnessed extreme climate events around the world.

This comes after last year recorded the hottest temperatures in history, and despite the natural weather fluctuations from year to year, scientists have observed a clear trend towards a continuous rise in the Earth’s temperature due to emissions.
