The Arab League organizes the seventeenth meeting of the Technical Committee for Arab Rules of Origin

 The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, (Economic Affairs Sector – Arab Economic Integration Department), organized the seventeenth meeting of the Technical Committee for the Arab Rules of Origin, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat, with the participation of representatives of the Arab countries that are members of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area.

 

Ambassador Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Maliki, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Economic Affairs Sector, said that this meeting comes within the framework of ongoing efforts to activate the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, stressing that updating the general provisions of the rules The meeting discussed in particular Article 17 of the agreement to facilitate and develop trade exchange between Arab countries, in a way that ensures Its consistency with current economic and trade developments, based on studies prepared by member states.  The committee also discussed the establishment of a joint electronic platform to exchange certificates of origin electronically within the framework of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, where an expert from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) gave a visual presentation on the platform in terms of its nature, objectives, working mechanisms and other technical matters. It is noteworthy that the General Secretariat is currently cooperating and coordinating with (ESCWA) to establish this platform because of its great benefits towards facilitating trade exchange between member states of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area. 

The committee discussed proposed articles regulating certificates of origin issued electronically and reflecting the relevant decisions of the Economic and Social Council in the general provisions of the Arab rules of origin; This reflects the trend towards digital transformation within the framework of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, through the use of unified and secure tools for issuing certificates, which enhances the reliability of exchange and reduces administrative and technical obstacles.

During the meeting, the final version of the general provisions of the rules of origin was considered, after including the comments of member states, in preparation for submitting it to the Economic and Social Council to consider adopting the final version; In a way that serves the objectives of the agreement and enhances Arab economic integration.
