"source" Energy storage battery systems facility begins operation in "Stockport" In the United Kingdom

Stockport – United Kingdom, December 17 / WAM / Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, Masdar, announced the start of commercial operation of the energy storage battery systems facility in the Stockport area, which is the first project to be completed within the framework of Masdar’s commitment to invest one billion pounds in energy storage battery systems projects in the United Kingdom.

The company will develop two more projects for energy storage battery systems in the Cardiff and Chesterfield regions.

The capacity of the Stockport facility, located on Wilkin Road, is 20 MW/40 MWh, and will contribute to providing clean electricity to about 20,000 homes for more than two hours, while the Chesterfield and Cardiff projects, which will have a total capacity of 150 MW/300 MWh, will contribute to storing energy and providing electricity throughout the entire day to more than 35,000 homes in the United Kingdom.

Construction work on the Stockport project began in May 2024.

Following Masdar’s acquisition of Arlington Energy in 2022, the company committed to investing one billion pounds in a portfolio of projects for energy storage battery systems in the United Kingdom, with a total capacity of 3 gigawatt hours, as part of its efforts to contribute to a qualitative shift in the British energy sector.

The British government aims to implement energy storage projects with a capacity of up to 27 gigawatts by the end of the current decade, within the framework of the “Clean Energy 2030” action plan.

Hussein Al-Meer, Director of Offshore Wind Energy in the United Kingdom and the World at Masdar, said that the projects announced today reflect the company’s keenness to move forward with its plans to invest one billion pounds in the British energy storage battery systems sector, which plays a vital role in supporting a qualitative shift in the energy system in the United Kingdom, and that these systems will contribute to enhancing the deployment of renewable energy projects and achieving tangible benefits for consumers, the business sector and local communities.

Energy storage battery systems contribute to achieving balance and stability in renewable energy supplies, by providing a flexible energy resource that stores the surplus during periods of low demand and distributes it to the network during peak times. This flexibility contributes to enhancing grid stability and energy security, and supports the integration of renewable energy sources into networks, as well as reducing consumer bills and reducing carbon emissions.

Masdar is developing its projects in the field of energy storage batteries in accordance with the highest international standards of safety and security, as it includes advanced fire detection and suppression systems, in addition to providing a 24-hour surveillance camera system and local response capabilities.

Masdar is implementing projects for energy storage battery systems in the United Kingdom in coordination with local partners, ensuring a positive impact within local communities and providing tangible economic benefits throughout the Kingdom.

Stockport station is located on Wilkin Road on a redeveloped industrial site. During its construction, biodiversity in the local environment was promoted by providing bird and bat boxes to protect wildlife, planting native plants, and reducing the spread of Japanese knotweed. A community fund is also being established to provide financial support to local initiatives and causes.

The Chesterfield project, located in Callow Green, will be built on land previously used for coal mining, and the area will be transformed into a center for producing and storing clean energy. The development of the project will take into account the agricultural character of the region, while the land will be rehabilitated and used for positive environmental purposes, so that the project embodies a model for reinvesting former industrial sites and enhancing the future sustainable energy system.

The Cardiff project is also located within a redeveloped industrial site on Ipswich Road, where underutilized land will be fully rehabilitated, avoiding the need to develop new land, while making effective use of existing facilities and access roads.

Last October, Masdar laid the foundation stone to begin construction of the largest project of its kind in the world and the most technologically advanced in Abu Dhabi, which includes a solar power plant with a capacity of 5.2 gigawatts and a battery system with a capacity of 19 gigawatts/hour, to provide up to 1 gigawatt of renewable baseload energy daily.

The most prominent projects of Masdar in the British market include the East Anglia 3 offshore wind power station with a capacity of 1.4 gigawatts, which is a joint investment between Masdar and Iberdrola worth 5.2 billion euros, and when operational, it will contribute to supplying 1.3 million homes with electricity in Britain. In addition to the 3 GW Dogger Bank South offshore wind farm, which is being developed in partnership with RWI.
