“Roads and Transport” employs drone technology to inspect Dubai Metro tunnels

In a step that reflects its commitment to enhancing safety and operational efficiency, the Roads and Transport Authority announced the use of drone technology to inspect the Dubai Metro tunnels, in cooperation with the metro operator (Keolis MHI). This initiative represents a qualitative leap and the beginning of a new phase of innovation, excellence and digital development in Dubai Metro operations.
In detail, Dawoud Al-Rayes, Director of the Maintenance Department at the Rail Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority, said: “The use of technology has contributed to achieving a 60% reduction in inspection duration, enhancing safety and operational efficiency, in addition to a significant improvement in the efficiency of inspection operations as a whole, especially in some areas of the tunnels that were challenging in terms of access, which required prior entry arrangements.
Today, drones allow these areas to be examined easily, with a wider range of vision, and the ability to capture high-resolution images that enable deeper and more accurate analyses.
He added that this technology reduces human risks, and its impact is not limited to that only, but extends to automatically collecting data, issuing digital reports that support improved maintenance and decision-making, and paves the way for the future use of artificial intelligence techniques in analyzing captured images.”
This innovative transformation represents an important step in the Authority’s efforts to adopt smart and advanced technologies, in line with the UAE’s vision in the field of digital transformation. It contributes to raising levels of safety and operational efficiency, and sets new standards for predictive maintenance and extending the life of assets.
This initiative also reflects the authority’s alignment with its strategy 2024-2030, which focuses on sustainability, innovation and excellence in services. It also supports the UAE’s national innovation strategy, which aims to consolidate the country’s position among the world’s most innovative countries by adopting advanced technologies in vital sectors.
For his part, Vikas Sardana, Acting General Manager at Keolis MHI, said: “We at Keolis MHI are proud to support the Roads and Transport Authority’s vision towards a smarter, safer and more efficient transportation system. This development embodies our shared commitment to innovation that not only enhances operational performance, but also gives the safety of work teams a top priority. By adopting new technologies, we contribute to creating a safer working environment and setting modern standards of excellence in the operation of railway transportation systems.”
As Dubai continues to lead the shift towards smart mobility, the integration of drones into metro operations reflects the Emirate of Dubai’s commitment to developing smart infrastructure, applying advanced safety standards, and promoting technology-based excellence. This step represents clear evidence that the Dubai Metro not only keeps pace with global innovation, but also contributes to creating it.
