ABU DHABI, 25 December / WAM / The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development contributed to financing the project to supply the city of Kiffa and a number of neighboring regions in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania with potable water, which is one of the largest vital projects aimed at enhancing water security and meeting the increasing demand for water in the states of Asaba and Kedi Magha.
The project witnessed the laying of the foundation stone in the presence of His Excellency Mohamed Ould Sheikh Al-Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, in the town of Tuimirt Iflan, south of the city of Kiffa, as a first step in implementing this strategic project that depends on transporting water from the Senegal River to supply dozens of cities and villages with potable water.
The project, whose cost exceeds 300 million US dollars, is considered one of the most important water supply projects in Mauritania, as upon completion it will provide drinking water to more than 180,000 people currently, with a gradual expansion to serve 500,000 beneficiaries by 2050.
It also includes the establishment of production and processing facilities with a capacity of up to 50 thousand cubic meters per day, which can be expanded, in addition to developing a transmission and distribution network extending more than 780 kilometers of pipelines to feed the cities and villages located on the project’s path.
His Excellency Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, said that the project to supply the city of Kiffa with potable water represents a strategic step to address one of the most pressing challenges in the region, which is water scarcity.
He added that the Fund’s financing of this project contributes to providing sustainable solutions that enhance the quality of life and support stability and economic and social development in Mauritania, explaining that the project embodies a model of development partnerships through which the Fund is keen to enable communities to access basic services that guarantee a decent life, in line with the UAE’s established role in supporting development initiatives that have a direct impact on people’s lives.
He said that the development partnership between the Fund and Mauritania, extending since 1977, resulted in the financing of a number of vital projects in the infrastructure and basic services sectors, stressing the Fund’s keenness to continue its role in supporting projects that achieve added value to the Mauritanian economy and contribute to the well-being of society.
The project is implemented in partnership with a number of Arab, Islamic and international development funds, within the framework of joint cooperation that contributes to the financing and implementation of one of the largest water projects in Mauritania, thus enhancing national efforts to ensure safe water reaches the various beneficiary areas.
