The role of women during exam times… One hug can make the difference

Recent psychological studies confirm that hugging is not just an emotional expression, but rather an effective means of support that reduces stress and exam anxiety among students, especially during stressful academic periods. Safe physical contact gives a feeling of reassurance, helps calm the nervous system and improves the ability to concentrate.

Exam anxiety is a widespread phenomenon that begins in the early school years and continues until university. Recent research indicates that high percentages of students suffer from moderate to severe levels of stress, which is reflected in physical and psychological symptoms such as headaches, rapid heartbeat, sweating, difficulty concentrating, and fear of failure.

The effect of hugs is not limited to the psychological aspect only, as an American study showed that social support, including regular hugs, enhances immunity and reduces the impact of stress-related diseases. European research has also shown that simple emotional touch improves students’ general well-being, attention, and social relationships.

In the absence of family support, alternative techniques can be resorted to, such as the “butterfly hug,” which is a method that relies on embracing oneself and lightly patting the shoulders, and which has been proven effective in reducing anxiety and improving performance.

However, specialists stress that hugs do not replace good study and time management. Therefore, families are advised to provide balanced support during the exam season, based on encouragement without pressure, reducing burdens, paying attention to the effort expended and not just the results, and providing a comfortable study environment.
