5 reasons why it is important for students to retain science, mathematics, and English books

A number of educators identified five main reasons for the importance of students retaining textbooks in mathematics and science (for all cycles) and English for the third cycle, because of the cumulative nature of these subjects that require continuous reference to previous concepts, ensuring continuity of learning and achieving integration between the content of the different classrooms.

Educational concepts
Educators Khaled Abdel Hamid, Salma Eid, and Humaidan Madi explained to Emirates Today that these reasons are: ensuring the sequence of educational concepts, supporting continuous learning and addressing educational loss, benefiting from previous activities and training, enhancing review skills and preparing for evaluations, and establishing a culture of preserving books and assuming responsibility, which contributes to raising the level of academic achievement and improving the quality of the outcomes of the educational process.

Educational practices
In this context, and in the interest of the Ministry of Education to implement the best educational practices, a circular was issued to parents requiring students to keep first semester books in preparation for the second and third semesters, considering the textbook a basic reference that supports the educational process and complements the content of class lessons.

Cumulative construction
The circular includes mathematics and science subjects for all grades, and the English language subject for the third cycle, as these subjects depend on the cumulative construction of concepts and knowledge, which makes referring to the content of the first semester an educational necessity to understand subsequent lessons correctly.

Connecting experiences
Keeping books contributes to strengthening the connection between previous and new educational experiences, which reflects positively on the level of understanding and comprehension among students.

Addressing weakness
The availability of first-semester books also provides students with an effective opportunity to address any academic weakness or educational loss that may appear during the coming semesters, and helps teachers employ previous content when needed, in a way that supports continuous learning and enhances deep understanding, especially in the subjects of mathematics and science, which require continuous knowledge and skill accumulation.

Practical activities
They reported that the textbooks contain applied activities, various exercises, and enrichment examples that can be used for review or during the implementation of curricular and extracurricular activities, which contributes to developing students’ thinking and analytical skills, and enhances their readiness for assessments and tests by linking previous concepts to new topics.

Sense of responsibility
This educational trend reflects the Ministry’s keenness to establish a culture of preserving textbooks and developing a sense of responsibility among students, in addition to supporting the principles of sustainability and reducing waste of educational resources.

Follow up on commitment
School administrations stressed to Emirates Today the importance of the role of parents in guiding their children and following up on their commitment to the instructions issued, in a way that enhances the effective partnership between the school and the family.

Academic achievement
They said: “Adhering to the content of this circular would contribute to raising the level of academic achievement, achieving integration between curriculum chapters, and ensuring an organized and effective educational environment.”

Ongoing support
The departments confirmed their continued follow-up of the implementation of the circular, appreciating the parents’ cooperation and continued support for the educational process, and wishing everyone continued success.
