Bulgaria opens the new year by adopting the euro as its official currency

At midnight Thursday (22:00 GMT Wednesday), the small Balkan country that joined the European Union in 2007 abandoned the lev, its national currency used since the end of the nineteenth century, in the hope of strengthening its economic relations with other members of the euro zone, while there are fears that this will lead to higher prices.
