The European Union calls for “restraint” and respect for international law in Venezuela

European Union foreign policy chief Kaya Kallas called on Saturday for “restraint” and respect for international law in Venezuela, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of the arrest of his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolas Maduro.

Callas said on the X platform that she spoke by phone with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reminding him that the European Union questioned Maduro’s democratic legitimacy.

“In all cases, the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter must be respected,” she wrote. “We call for restraint.”
