"Bruges" The first autonomous operations using artificial intelligence are being developed

ABU DHABI, 7 JANUARY / WAM / Borouge PLC announced today the successful completion of the proof of concept for autonomous operations powered by artificial intelligence at its facility in Ruwais, in cooperation with Honeywell.

This achievement contributes to supporting Borouge’s strategy to enhance operational performance, consolidate its competitiveness in the long term, and contribute to achieving ADNOC’s ambition to become the energy company most dependent on artificial intelligence in the world.

Based on trials conducted in 2025, the proof of concept represents significant progress towards developing the petrochemical industry’s first AI-powered control room, for immediate and complete operation in real time and at scale.

The experiments were conducted in an actual production environment, and the results showed the potential to increase operational efficiency by up to 20%, enhance reliability, reduce downtime by 20%, and improve production performance, while reducing operational costs by up to 15%.

The technology also contributes to enhancing the safety of operations and supporting sustainable operation by reducing energy consumption and associated emissions.

Hazim Sultan Al Suwaidi, CEO of Borouge, said that this achievement reflects Borouge’s commitment to accelerating growth, enhancing shareholder value, and increasing operational efficiency. By developing self-operation capabilities in cooperation with Honeywell, Borouge strengthens its competitive position and supports ADNOC’s ambition to become the energy company most reliant on artificial intelligence in the world.

This achievement is an essential element of the Borouge Program for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Transformation and Technology, which aims to achieve 2.11 billion dirhams ($575 million) in value during the year 2025, through a group of initiatives based on artificial intelligence and digital solutions.

The program reflects the company’s continued focus on disciplined execution, achieving tangible operational impact, and providing sustainable value over the long term.

For his part, Jim Masso, President and CEO of Honeywell Process Automation, said that the cooperation with Borouge constitutes a pioneering model in the field of safely and effectively integrating autonomous operations supported by artificial intelligence into an actual production system, as this step confirms the great potential provided by advanced connected solutions in terms of enhancing efficiency and reliability, as well as operational performance on a large scale.

After proving the successful concept in cooperation with Honeywell, Borouge will move forward in its work to review additional capabilities for autonomous operation, and evaluate opportunities to expand the application of the technology across its facilities in Ruwais.
