Egypt announces achieving self-sufficiency in sugar

Egyptian Minister of Supply Sherif Farouk said on Sunday that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in sugar during the year 2025, within the framework of an integrated plan that aims to support and increase local production of cane and sugar beets, while expanding cultivated areas and improving productivity.
The Minister pointed out that the quantities of local wheat supplies during the 2025 season increased by 17 percent, reaching more than four million tons, while the total consumption of wheat allocated for the production of subsidized bread amounts to about nine million tons, indicating that the rest of the quantity is imported from abroad.
He explained that if the current increase in local supply annually is maintained, the goal is to achieve self-sufficiency in wheat allocated for the production of bread supported by local production, with an ambitious plan to expand the areas of land cultivated with wheat, along with other strategic crops.
