The United Nations warns of the consequences of ignoring international law and being selective in adhering to the rules

In a post on the X website, Secretary-General António Guterres confirmed that United Nations Charter It is the foundation of international relations and the pillar of peace, sustainable development and human rights.
He added: “When a handful of individuals can change global narratives, influence elections, or dictate the terms of public deliberations, we face inequality and the corruption of institutions and our shared values.”
He stressed that the United Nations Charter is a binding covenant for all, and all countries must comply with it fully and sincerely.
Who builds trust?
On the other hand, the President of the United Nations General Assembly delivered a speech before the World Economic Forum in Davos, in which senior world leaders participate, in which she asked who could build confidence.
Annalena Baerbock said that the question is simple, and in normal times its answer will be simple: multilateral institutions such as the United Nations.
And I talked about General Assemblywhich presides over its eightieth session, and how it is the most representative body of states, as it includes 193 member states, each of which enjoys one seat and an equal vote, regardless of its wealth or power, which gives it “Unparalleled moral authority”.
But she added that the current times are “unfortunately not normal,” noting that the world is at a crossroads. She said that more member states hesitate when circumstances require “principled convictions.”
“The United Nations is under explicit attack.”
Annalena Baerbock added that the voices that were once loud in support of the three pillars of the United Nations Charter – peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights – are becoming more and more silent in the face of the erosion of those pillars.
She said that “The United Nations is not only under pressure, but under open attack.”
She emphasized that defending the rules-based international order is not only the right thing to do, but it is also in self-interests.
She said: “The founders of the United Nations understood this because they saw what the alternative meant. In a world where might becomes right, there can only be one outcome: chaos and war. The Charter of the United Nations is the common life insurance of the world.”
The President of the General Assembly answered the question she posed in her speech, and said that the one who can build trust is the one who reinforces common rules and principles even when it is difficult, the one who takes action when action is required even if the price is high, and the one who speaks the truth when silence or distortion is easier.
It called for the formation of a cross-regional coalition to support the international system. She said that this coalition is really large and includes 193 member states of the United Nations, with the exception of a few.
