Union Water and Electricity participates in alliances to develop the Misfat and Duqm projects in the Sultanate of Oman

DUBAI, January 23, 2017 (WAM) – Etihad Water and Electricity announced its participation in the alliances to develop the Misfah and Duqm electricity production projects in the Sultanate of Oman, following the signing by Nama Power and Water Procurement Company of alliance agreements led by Nebras Power Company to develop the Misfah project, and another led by Korea Western Power Company to develop the Duqm project, with a total investment estimated at about one billion Omani riyals.

The Misfah Project Alliance includes both Al Ittihad Water and Electricity Company and Bahwan Infrastructure Services Company, and is responsible for developing the Misfah Electricity Production Station with a total capacity of about 1,700 megawatts, while the Duqm Project Alliance includes Nebras Power Company, Al Ittihad Water and Electricity Company, and Bahwan Infrastructure Services Company, and is responsible for developing the Duqm Electricity Production Station with a total capacity of about 877 megawatts. The two projects rely on advanced, highly efficient combined cycle gas turbine plants, which enhances fuel efficiency and contributes to reducing carbon emissions.

It is expected that these projects, when they enter into operation, will contribute to enhancing the stability of the national electrical grid in the Sultanate of Oman and supporting economic and industrial growth, in addition to being ready to integrate with carbon capture systems in the future, in a way that supports the Sultanate’s move towards a low-carbon energy system.

His Excellency Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Union Water and Electricity Company, said: “This partnership reflects the UAE’s commitment to strengthening regional cooperation based on sustainability and mutual benefit in the energy sector. Through our partnership with the sister Sultanate of Oman, we are working to support the development of efficient and flexible energy generation systems, which contributes to enhancing energy security and reliability of supplies, and in line with global trends for a gradual shift towards low-emission energy systems. We value bilateral relations. “The well-established cooperation between our two countries, and we look forward to continuing this constructive cooperation to achieve practical results that support sustainable growth and regional stability in the long term.”

His Excellency Engineer Salem bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals in the Sultanate of Oman, confirmed that the Misfah and Duqm projects represent an important step in strengthening the national energy system, and an embodiment of the Sultanate of Oman’s commitment to achieving the goals of Oman Vision 2040 and zero neutrality by 2050, by adopting highly efficient technologies capable of operating with a fuel mixture containing up to 30% hydrogen.

His Excellency Engineer Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs in Qatar and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nebras Power Company, said that the two projects will contribute to meeting the growing demand for electricity in the Sultanate of Oman, supporting social and economic development, and creating job opportunities for skilled Omanis.

For his part, Engineer Yousef Ahmed Al Ali, CEO of Union Water and Electricity Company, said: “Our participation in the Misfat and Duqm projects is an extension of the role of Union Water and Electricity as a regional development partner in vital infrastructure projects, based on our experience in developing and operating large-scale projects. This participation is consistent with our commitment to supporting regional energy security, enhancing Gulf integration, and contributing to the development of efficient power generation solutions that are ready for the requirements of a low-carbon transition.”

Union Water and Electricity Company’s joining of these strategic alliances is an extension of its role as a leading service facility that contributes to supporting sustainable economic and societal growth, and enhances its presence as an effective development partner in vital infrastructure projects at the region level. The company serves more than 2 million people in the northern Emirates, and operates a water supply network and electricity lines exceeding 23,000 km in length, in addition to its active participation in public-private partnership projects at the Gulf and regional levels.
