8 dead and 82 missing in a landslide

A landslide occurred at dawn on Saturday, on the main island of Java in Indonesia, as a result of heavy rains, killing at least eight people and leaving 82 others missing, while rescuers struggled to find survivors.

Days of heavy rain caused rivers to overflow, damaging the village of Pasir Langu, in the West Bandung district of West Java province, and burying about 34 homes.

The National Disaster Management Agency said that rescue teams were searching for 82 residents who were feared to be buried under piles of mud and debris, while 24 people were able to survive this disaster on their own.

About eight bodies were recovered in the worst-hit village of Pasir Kuning after the landslide that occurred at 3 a.m. swept away homes and residents.
