The UAE celebrates World Clean Energy Day by leading international efforts towards a sustainable future

Abu Dhabi, January 26 / WAM / The UAE continues to provide active support to global efforts in the field of transition to clean energy, by investing in more clean energy projects through its strategic partnerships, supportive platforms, and financing solutions for sustainable initiatives, especially in developing and climate-fragile societies.

The UAE celebrates World Clean Energy Day, which falls on January 26 of each year, and has made rapid strides in developing renewable and clean energy projects, becoming a role model at the global level in the transition towards sustainable and equitable energy for all.

The installed capacity of renewable energy in the UAE has exceeded 7.7 gigawatts, with projects under implementation that will raise the total capacity to more than 23 gigawatts by 2031.

National investments in the renewable and clean energy sector amounted to more than 190 billion dirhams, which reflects the state’s confidence in this vital sector, a major driver of sustainable development.

The UAE decided to raise the national target for producing electricity from clean sources to 35% by 2031, and to integrate the National Hydrogen Strategy 2050 into the comprehensive energy planning system.

The UAE achieved a noticeable increase in the installed capacity of renewable energy by 117% between 2022 and 2025, which reflects the accelerating pace of transformation towards a more sustainable and efficient energy system.

Thanks to national consumption efficiency programmes, led by the National Energy and Water Demand Management Programme, which was launched in 2020, the UAE has succeeded in reducing more than 14.8 million tons of carbon emissions and achieving financial savings exceeding two billion dollars within five years, as part of a path that aims to reduce energy consumption by 43% and water by 50% by 2050.

The UAE launched the Global Alliance for Energy Efficiency to be the first international platform of its kind that brings together governments, the private sector and international organizations under one umbrella, which aims to double the rate of improvement in global energy efficiency to more than 4% annually until 2030, a goal that is in line with international climate commitments and enhances collective action.

Through the leadership of this alliance, the UAE is strengthening its position as a leading and inspiring country globally, proposing practical initiatives and providing an attractive environment for international partnerships and investments in sustainable energy.

The UAE has made advanced strides in achieving the goals of the next fifty years in terms of sustainability of the energy sector, diversifying its sources of energy, and advancing the transition to clean ones. For example, after one year of full operation, the Barakah plants succeeded in providing 25% of the country’s electricity needs, and contributed to reducing 22.4 million tons of emissions annually.

The UAE continues to contribute to accelerating the process of relying on clean energy sources around the world, through a package of projects funded and implemented by a group of national companies in this field.

In this context, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company “Masdar”, the world leader in the field of clean energy, announced this January the growth of the total production capacity of its project portfolio to 65 gigawatts, compared to 51 gigawatts in 2025, two decades after the UAE leadership’s strategic decision to invest in renewable energy sources from an early stage.

Masdar reported that within the total production capacity of 65 gigawatts, there are projects in operation, under construction, or that the company is committed to developing with a capacity of 45 gigawatts, while the total capacity of projects in advanced stages is 20 gigawatts, so that the company has so far come about two-thirds of the way to reaching the goal of 100 gigawatts by 2030.

In turn, Global South Utilities – GSU, a subsidiary of Resources Investment, an Abu Dhabi-based investment company, concluded this January a strategic industrial cooperation partnership with the Chinese company Weiheng, a global manufacturer of battery energy storage systems, with the aim of locally manufacturing advanced clean energy technologies in Abu Dhabi, supporting the UAE’s endeavors in industrial development, transformation in the energy sector, and strengthening supply chains directed to the markets of the countries of the Global South.

In 2025, Global South Utilities signed two agreements with the government of Madagascar, aiming to enhance the country’s ability to produce renewable energy and accelerate the pace of transition towards clean energy. It also joined the “Atom Solar Egypt” project to establish an integrated industrial complex for the production of solar cells and panels, with investments amounting to $220 million (about 810 million dirhams), and announced the start of construction work on a 50-megawatt solar photovoltaic power station in the city.
