Britain responds to Moscow by withdrawing diplomatic accreditation… and warnings of escalation

The UK government’s move came after Russia reported on January 15 that it had summoned the British Chargé d’Affairs in Moscow and issued a strong protest, and that it would withdraw the accreditation of diplomat Gareth Samuel Davies after receiving information indicating that he belonged to British intelligence.

Russia warned Britain against escalating the situation, expressing its readiness for a decisive and equal response if London decided to respond.
