Al Zahra Hospital Dubai introduces next-generation photon-counting CT technology in the UAE to enhance diagnostic imaging capabilities

Al Zahra Hospital in Dubai announced the installation of a CT machine with NAEOTOM Alpha photon counting technology, produced by Siemens, as an important step in the field of developing computed tomography and expanding its capabilities in the field of diagnostic imaging.
Photon-counting CT represents a new generation of CT imaging technology that differs from conventional CT by monitoring and counting individual X-ray photons. This approach enables improved spatial resolution, reduced image noise, and spectral information with each scan, supporting more detailed anatomical and functional assessment across a wide range of clinical applications.
Enhance image quality and diagnostic confidence
Compared to conventional CT systems, photon-counting CT allows for higher spatial resolution, which supports fine anatomical details while reducing image distortions. Spectral imaging also enables doctors to distinguish between substances such as iodine, calcium and soft tissue within a single scan, without the need for additional imaging protocols, which enhances diagnostic confidence, especially in complex clinical cases where image clarity is crucial.
Supporting patient safety through radiation dose efficiency
The device is designed to deliver high image quality at lower radiation dose levels compared to conventional CT systems. This feature is particularly important in imaging children and young adults, cardiac imaging, and patients who need frequent follow-up examinations.
The advanced technologies in the device can also reduce the contrast material given to patients while maintaining the clarity of the images, which may benefit patients with poor kidney function or other risk factors.
Expanding capabilities in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular imaging
In cardiac imaging, photon-counting CT supports imaging of coronary arteries with CT, especially in patients whose imaging has traditionally been a challenge, such as those with high coronary calcifications, a high body mass index, or higher pulse rates. Clinical experience has shown that improved spatial resolution may support more accurate assessment of coronary artery disease and assist clinicians in treatment planning
In stroke and cerebrovascular imaging, thanks to the rapid imaging system, its high accuracy, and the software supported by artificial intelligence, timely assessment of vascular structures and brain perfusion contributes to accelerating clinical decision-making in time-sensitive cases.
Wide clinical applications across multiple specialties
In addition to cardiology and neurology, photon-counting CT supports a wide range of clinical applications, including musculoskeletal imaging, oncology, and abdominal imaging. The technology allows clearer visualization of fractures, implants/implants, tumors and complex lesions, even in patients with a high BMI, often within a single comprehensive examination.
Promoting and developing advanced healthcare in Dubai
Dr. Omar Ali, Medical Director at Al Zahra Hospital Dubai, commented on the introduction of the technology, saying: The addition of CT scanning technology reflects our continued investment in providing advanced diagnostic solutions that support clinical accuracy and patient safety. This system enhances our ability to provide accurate imaging across multiple specialties and supports clinical decision-making based on clear information.
This installation is consistent with Dubai’s high ambitions in the healthcare sector by supporting the availability of advanced diagnostic technologies and enhancing the emirate’s position as a regional center for specialized medical care.
