After returning it to Mauritius, Trump announces an agreement with London regarding the Chagos Islands

US President Donald Thursday after a conversation with the British Prime Minister expressed his understanding of Britain’s move to restore to the island of Mauritius, but warned that he would defend the American military presence in this archipelago located in the Indian Ocean.

The American president, who initially strongly criticized London’s decision, wrote on his platform Truth Social: "I understand that Prime Minister Starmer has reached the best possible agreement".

Added: "But if this lease fails in the near future, or if any party threatens or exposes American operations and forces at our base, I reserve the right to protect and strengthen the American presence in Diego Garcia militarily."in reference to the American-British base of great strategic importance located on the main island of the archipelago.

Britain had retained the Chagos Islands after the independence of Mauritius in the 1960s.

In May 2025, London signed an agreement with its former colony under which it recognized its sovereignty over the archipelago, while retaining a joint British-American military base on Diego Garcia, its largest island, under a lease contract.
