The UAE and Germany strengthen their relations in the energy sector during Chancellor Merz’s visit to ADNOC’s headquarters

ABU DHABI, 6 February / WAM / His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Managing Director and CEO of ADNOC and its group of companies, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Masdar, Executive Chairman of XRG, discussed with His Excellency Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, the strengthening of relations between the two friendly countries in the energy sector, during the German Chancellor’s visit to the headquarters of ADNOC in Abu Dhabi.
The visit witnessed a tour of the German Chancellor at ADNOC headquarters, with the participation of his accompanying delegation, and a number of executive management officials from ADNOC, XRG, and Masdar. The visit emphasized the importance of ADNOC’s pivotal role in strengthening the strategic partnership between the UAE and Germany in the energy sector, as it comes after “XRG”, the international investment arm of ADNOC in the energy sector, invested 14.7 billion euros to acquire “Covestro” company, support its long-term growth and consolidate its leading position in the global industrial sector.
During the visit, Chancellor Merz was briefed on the latest developments in ADNOC’s efforts, which effectively contribute to meeting Germany’s growing needs for energy resources by increasing supplies of liquefied natural gas, based on the agreements it recently concluded with German companies to supply 1.6 million tons annually of liquefied natural gas from the Ruwais LNG project. ADNOC currently supplies the German market with about 0.7 million tons annually of natural gas.
The German advisor also toured ADNOC’s “Panorama” digital control center and the ADNOC Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, where he learned about how the company benefits from artificial intelligence tools across the various stages and areas of its business, from control rooms to executive management meeting rooms, and its application of advanced technology solutions to enhance value and raise the efficiency of its operations.
His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said: “In line with the vision of the wise leadership to build bridges of partnership and cooperation to ensure energy security and achieve growth and progress, we are pleased to welcome His Excellency Chancellor Friedrich Merz to ADNOC headquarters, where we reaffirmed the strength of the long-term strategic partnership between the UAE and Germany, and their close relations built on mutual trust and respect. His Excellency’s visit to the UAE provided an important opportunity to explore new horizons of cooperation in pivotal sectors including energy, industry, artificial intelligence and technology. Advanced, and we look forward to consolidating cooperative relations with our partners in the Federal Republic of Germany, contributing to creating long-term value and supporting growth and economic and social progress.”
During the visit, ADNOC and RWE Logistics and Trading Company (RWE) announced a strategic cooperation agreement to explore opportunities to supply liquefied natural gas to Germany and European markets in quantities of up to one million metric tons annually for up to ten years. As part of the agreement, the two parties will also work to explore cooperation opportunities in liquefied natural gas trade and gas regasification capabilities in Germany and Europe, in addition to broader opportunities within the gas and liquefied natural gas business system.
Masdar and RWE also agreed, through a memorandum of understanding, to identify and explore investment opportunities in battery energy storage systems projects in Germany. The visit also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Covestro, Vertiglob, and Taziz to explore cooperation opportunities in the fields of ammonia and sustainable materials.
It is worth noting that the UAE and Germany continue to strengthen their partnership in the energy sector, of which ADNOC is a fundamental pillar. In December 2025, XRG completed a voluntary takeover offer for Covestro AG, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high-performance chemicals and polymers. ADNOC also delivered the first shipment of liquefied natural gas from the Middle East to Germany in 2023, and later concluded several agreements to supply liquefied natural gas with German companies.
