America calls for multilateral talks on limiting nuclear weapons

The United States called for the launch of multilateral talks on nuclear arms control and strategic stability, based on three main principles: expanding responsibility for nuclear stability to include other countries, not accepting agreements that harm American interests or ignore non-compliance, and negotiating from a position of strength while maintaining a strong, modern nuclear deterrent.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the expiration of the “New START” nuclear arms control treaty marks the beginning of a new era in nuclear arms control efforts, stressing that the current international reality requires a different approach that takes into account the radical changes in the global balance of nuclear power.
He said, “The arms control negotiations during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union were among the most complex negotiations in history, but they succeeded in enhancing the security of the United States by building confidence and strict verification systems.”
Rubio noted – in an article published by the US State Department – that this stage has come to an end with the end of the New START Treaty, noting that US President Donald Trump clearly stressed that any future arms control agreement must be multilateral and include all major nuclear powers.
