The Arab League celebrates a decade of sustainable development achievements
Cairo, February 16, 2016 – The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States organized a celebration on the occasion of the Arab Sustainability Day 2026 under the slogan “The Sustainable Development Path: A Decade of Achievements,” coinciding with the ten-year anniversary of the launch of the institutional path for sustainable development in 2016, in the presence of His Excellency Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League, and Sheikh Faisal bin Saud Al Qasimi, Supreme President of the Arab Network for Creativity and Innovation.
In his speech on this occasion, Aboul Gheit said that the gravity of the current crises should not be an excuse to deviate from the path of sustainable development, stressing that development in times of crises is a condition for survival and a basis for building peace and restoring stability.
He pointed out that the period from 2016 to 2026 witnessed the launch of initiatives and projects that contributed to consolidating sustainability and integrating it into policies and plans at the Arab and national levels, calling for activating the implementation of the Arab Vision 2045 approved by the Arab Development Summit in Baghdad in its six main axes, with attention to youth and the promotion of Arab cooperation and integration.
Sheikh Faisal bin Saud Al Qasimi said in his speech that innovation represents a strategic necessity for the future of Arab development, stressing the importance of linking it to sustainable development goals, building a unified Arab system for innovation and development indicators, developing financing policies that support entrepreneurship and projects with a developmental impact, enhancing integration between governments, the private sector and academic institutions, and investing in Arab human capital.
He pointed out that the Arab Network for Creativity and Innovation works as an executive platform supporting joint Arab efforts.
Minister Plenipotentiary Dr. Nada Al-Agizi, Director of the Department of Sustainable Development and International Cooperation at the Arab League, said in her speech that the path of sustainable development in the region has witnessed a qualitative shift from a theoretical proposal to a solid institutional system, explaining that since 2016 the university has paid growing attention to this file through the establishment of the Department of Sustainable Development in 2016 and the establishment of the Arab Committee to follow up on the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in 2017 under the supervision of the Economic and Social Council, which strengthened the economic, social and environmental dimensions. Within the joint Arab action system, she praised the role of His Excellency Ahmed Aboul Gheit in supporting this path, launching specialized initiatives and platforms, and crystallizing the Arab Vision 2025.
The celebration witnessed the honoring of His Excellency Ahmed Aboul Gheit; Sheikh Faisal bin Saud Al Qasimi, Dr. Heba Al Suwaidi, founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ahl Masr Foundation, Dr. Mustafa Hadib, President of the Arab Academy for Administrative, Financial and Banking Sciences, Dr. Salem bin Rakad Al Ameri, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Cancer Society, and the name of the late Karim Badr El Din, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Arab Youth Platform for Sustainable Development.
