The European Commission demands clarification from Washington on tariffs in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling

Brussels, February 22 / WAM / The European Commission has demanded full clarification on the steps that the United States intends to take after the recent Supreme Court ruling on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which invalidated broad customs tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, and stressed the need to protect the interests of the European Union and provide fair treatment for European companies while ensuring legal certainty and predictability.
The Commission stressed in a statement today (Sunday) that the current situation does not contribute to achieving “fair, balanced and mutually beneficial” transatlantic trade as stipulated in the joint statement between the European Union and the United States in August 2025.
It called on the United States, as a major trading partner, to adhere to its obligations in the joint statement, especially maintaining competitive treatment for European products without increasing tariffs beyond a previously agreed-upon ceiling.
The Commission held extensive contacts with the US administration, including a telephone call on February 21 between European Trade Commissioner Maroš Ševčović, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, with a focus on reducing tariffs and promoting a stable, rules-based trading environment.
