With a silent and bold role, Shukran Murtaja dazzles the audience

The Syrian star, Shukran Murtaja, aroused the public’s interest with an unusual appearance, when she appeared tired and in shabby clothes on social networking sites, which sparked questions about her new role in the Levantine environment series “The Orphan.” The character she plays is called “Diba,” a homeless woman who lives in harsh conditions and faces great challenges. Shukran presents a radical shift in her artistic path away from her previous roles.
It takes Shukran Murtaja to prepare for the character “Diba” from two to two and a half hours a day during the days of filming the series “The Orphan,” as the production and directing team focused on every detail of her external appearance, in a way that serves the realistic Levantine environment in which the events of the series take place. Director Tamer Ishaq was also keen to invest every movement and gesture from Shukran to convey the human and social dimension of the characters.
Through the character “Diba”, Shukran Murtaja proves her ability to move between various roles, after she excelled in other comedic and dramatic roles, such as: “Memoirs of a Former Mistress” and “The King’s Family.” In “The Orphan,” the character turns into a silent face, relying on looks, groans, and movements instead of speaking, which reflects Shukran’s ability to convey pain and feelings honestly and realistically, and highlights the beauty of silence in drama as a powerful expressive tool.
