The US Senate refuses to restrict Trump’s powers in the war against Iran

The US Senate rejected, on Tuesday, the latest Democratic-led effort to limit President Donald Trump’s powers regarding the war against Iran. The vote was almost divided along party lines, as 47 members voted against 53 against the proposal, which means that it did not obtain the simple majority necessary to move forward with the proposal.

All Republicans voted against the resolution except Senator Rand Paul from Kentucky, while all Democrats supported it except Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania.

Earlier this month, Democrats presented several draft resolutions related to war powers, with the aim of preventing Trump from continuing a military attack on Iran without congressional approval.

They pledged to continue putting these resolutions to a vote as a way to extract public testimony from Trump administration officials about the dispute.

Tuesday’s vote on the resolution presented by Democratic Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut marks the third time since the military operation on February 28 that Republicans in the Senate have obstructed attempts to challenge Trump’s authority to wage war on Iran.

Another vote that took place last year in the wake of the strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities was also unsuccessful.
