The Security Council affirms its firm commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the GCC countries

The UN Security Council affirmed its firm commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and territorial integrity of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, praising the role they play in supporting international peace and security.
This came in a presidential statement issued by the Council, today, during a special session held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain, Dr. Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al-Zayani, during which the members discussed ways to enhance cooperation and partnership between the two sides, within the framework of the item entitled “Cooperation between the United Nations and regional and subregional organizations in maintaining international peace and security.”
The Council praised the contributions of the Gulf Cooperation Council in supporting regional and international stability, including its efforts in the fields of mediation and preventive diplomacy, and the provision of technical and financial support, as well as its important role in peacekeeping operations and its participation in United Nations humanitarian activities and efforts.
He stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the United Nations and the Gulf Cooperation Council in the field of maintaining international peace and security, in addition to developing institutional cooperation between the two sides by intensifying regular dialogue, enhancing coordination mechanisms and exchanging information, especially in the areas of conflict prevention, peacebuilding, combating terrorism, and humanitarian response.
In this context, the Council called on the Secretary-General of the United Nations to include practical recommendations to strengthen this cooperation in his next report addressed to both the Security Council and the General Assembly.
The statement encouraged the continuation of joint efforts to confront challenges of common concern, including maritime security, food and water security, in addition to enhancing the participation of women and youth in peace and security efforts, in line with relevant Security Council resolutions.
In the same context, the statement pointed to the pivotal role played by regional organizations in facing current challenges, stressing the necessity of developing effective partnerships between the Security Council and these organizations in accordance with Chapter Eight of the United Nations Charter, and reaffirming its primary responsibility in maintaining international peace and security.
At the beginning of the Council meeting today, members of the Security Council listened to two briefings, from the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Middle East, Asia and Pacific Affairs, Khaled Khayari, and the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, on aspects of cooperation between the United Nations and the Gulf Cooperation Council and current and common challenges.
