Dubai Roads awards a contract to implement 3 integrated truck rest areas

The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai has awarded a contract to implement three integrated truck rest areas, in partnership with the private sector, with a total area estimated at more than 210,000 square metres, with a capacity of 490 trucks and heavy vehicles.
The three integrated stations provide many services that enhance the safety and well-being of drivers, and are located in vital areas, strategic streets and logistics cities that attract a large number of trucks on a daily basis. International standards will be applied to provide safety requirements for the entrances and exits of these stations.
The appropriate locations were selected and identified to establish integrated rest stops for truck and heavy vehicle parking, based on standards and technical studies to maximize the benefit of these stations and serve the land transport sector. The selection took into account their presence on streets, strategic areas and logistical cities, to serve the largest number of trucks on a daily basis.
Partnership with the private sector
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, confirmed that awarding the contract to implement three integrated truck rest areas, in partnership with the private sector, represents a qualitative strategic step in developing the transport and logistics system in the Emirate of Dubai, and enhancing the efficiency of the land transport sector, in a way that supports the emirate’s position as a global center for trade and logistics services.
He said: “The Emirate of Dubai is witnessing continuous growth in the logistical transport sector, and its streets record more than 500,000 daily truck trips. Internal truck traffic in the emirate represents about 83% of the total truck traffic. The number of registered trucks in Dubai is 85,000 trucks, which reflects the volume of growing demand for specialized infrastructure that supports this vital sector.”
He added: “The implementation of truck rest stations comes in response to this rapid growth, and to enhance operating efficiency and traffic safety, by providing an integrated and safe environment for drivers, reducing random stops, and increasing the flow of movement on the road network, which contributes to supporting supply chains and their sustainability.”
He said that the shipping and logistics services sector in the UAE constitutes a strategic pillar and a major engine for sustainable economic growth, and one of the vital pillars in achieving the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda “D33”, which strengthens the emirate’s position as a global center for trade and supply chains. He pointed out that this role requires accelerating the pace of developing a smart and integrated infrastructure, based on innovation and advanced technologies, which raises the efficiency of logistical operations, enhances its flexibility and sustainability, and supports Dubai’s competitiveness on the map of the global economy.
Al Tayer stressed that the partnership with the private sector in implementing and operating these stations reflects the authority’s direction towards adopting modern models in developing infrastructure projects, in a way that enhances economic sustainability and raises operating efficiency. He stressed that the three stations were designed as integrated service complexes that provide accommodation, maintenance, training, and commercial services, in a way that enhances the quality of life for truck drivers and improves the work environment in this vital sector.
He pointed out that distributing these stations in strategic locations near logistics cities and major hubs enhances the integration of Dubai’s transportation system and supports the emirate’s readiness to keep pace with future growth in freight traffic, in line with the vision of the wise leadership to consolidate Dubai’s position as a leading global model in advanced infrastructure and quality of life.
Station details
The station, which is located near the third Jebel Ali area, has an area of ​​100,000 square metres, and a capacity of 250 trucks and heavy vehicles. It includes facilities and services that include: an inspection center for heavy vehicles, a driver training center on safety requirements, a maintenance center for light vehicles, a site for periodic maintenance, commercial stores, and warehouses for logistical services. It also includes accommodation, entertainment halls, electric charging points, and diesel filling points.
The second station is located in the Saih Shuaib area, near the entrance to Dubai Industrial City (DIC). It has an area of about 51,000 square metres, and can accommodate 120 trucks and heavy vehicles. It includes: residential units, a periodic maintenance centre, commercial stores, warehouses for logistical services, entertainment halls, and electric charging points. While the third station is located in Hind City 2, on Emirates Road next to Al Tayy Race Track, and has an area of more than 59,000 square meters and a capacity. It contains approximately 120 trucks and heavy vehicles, and includes: an inspection center for heavy vehicles, a driver training center on safety requirements, a site for periodic maintenance, commercial stores, and warehouses for logistics services. It also includes housing, entertainment halls, and electric charging points.
Field surveys
The Roads and Transport Authority attaches great importance to the land transport sector due to its major role in developing economic and commercial movement. The authority is conducting a comprehensive study of truck movement in Dubai, which includes conducting field surveys, interviews and workshops with relevant departments and companies, to develop a planning model for predicting future truck movement, and studying the need for dry ports or collection and distribution centers for goods, in addition to studying and evaluating the current ban policies, times and routes, and studying the need for special truck roads, in addition to the organizational and structural aspects related to managing the movement of trucks and goods in the emirate. It is worth noting that the Roads and Transport Authority, in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi National Company (ADNOC), implemented 14 truck rest stops, distributed over six vital locations, strategic streets and logistical cities that attract a large number of trucks on a daily basis, namely: Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Dubai – Hatta Road, Dubai – Al Ain Road, Jebel Ali Street – Lahbab, and Al Awir Street. The area of each truck rest stop ranges between 5,000 to 10,000 square meters, while the capacity of each rest area is estimated at between 30 and 40 trucks and heavy vehicles.
