War in the Middle East – The United Nations denounces the incitement and threat to “exterminate an entire civilization.”

Secretary-General António Guterres said: “No military objective can justify the wholesale destruction of a community’s infrastructure or the deliberate infliction of suffering on a civilian population.”

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said, in a statement in response to journalists’ questions, that the Secretary-General reiterates that conflicts end when leaders choose dialogue instead of destruction, and that this choice still exists and must be made now.

The Secretary-General called for intensified diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful path forward. Dujarric said that Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy Jean Arnault is on his way to the region to support these efforts.

In a statement on Tuesday, the High Commissioner called on the international community to take urgent steps to defuse tension and help protect the lives of all civilians.
