Gasoline prices may remain high until the congressional elections

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that oil and gasoline prices may remain high until the midterm congressional elections in November, in a rare acknowledgment of the potential political repercussions of his decision to launch an attack on Iran six weeks ago.

Trump, who is currently spending the weekend in Miami, told Fox News in response to a question about whether oil and gas prices will fall by the fall, “It may happen and it may stay the same or maybe a little higher, but it won’t go far.”

Gas Buddy data indicates that the average price of regular gasoline at American gas stations has exceeded four dollars per gallon most of the time since the beginning of April.

Trump’s statements today came weeks after he stressed that the rise in prices was a temporary phenomenon, despite what officials said that his senior advisors were aware of the economic effects of the war.
