Dubai Roads inaugurates the Hessa Street development project as part of a comprehensive vision to enhance the flow of traffic

Today (Sunday), the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai opened all work on the Hessa Street development project, in the direction from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road, with a length of 4.5 kilometers, where the street and bridges were expanded at the intersections of Hessa Street with Sheikh Zayed Street, Al Asayel Street, First Al Khail Street, and Al Khail Street, with a capacity of four lanes in each direction. Thus, the authority has completed the work of developing Hessa Street and the intersection bridges, and this contributes to The project aims to provide smooth traffic movement between Sheikh Zayed and Al Khail Roads in both directions, and reduce travel time from 15 minutes to four minutes.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, during his inspection of the final preparations for the Hessa Street development project prior to its opening, confirmed that the project comes in implementation of the directives of the wise leadership (may God protect it), to complete the development of the infrastructure of the road network, to enhance the flow of traffic, keep pace with the continuous development witnessed by the Emirate of Dubai, and accommodate the needs of urban development and population growth, noting that Hessa Street is one of the most important strategic road hubs in the Emirate of Dubai, It serves a number of residential and development areas, such as the Al Sufouh Second area, the Al Barsha residential area, and the Jumeirah Village Circle. The population of the areas served by the project is expected to reach more than 640,000 people in 2030, and it will contribute to increasing the capacity of Hessa Street from 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, an increase of 100%.

Al Tayer said: “The Hessa Street development project extends from its intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road to its intersection with Al Khail Road for a length of 4.5 km, and includes developing four main intersections on Hessa Street, with Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Street, in addition to increasing the number of lanes on Hessa Street from two lanes to four lanes in each direction, which contributes to increasing the street’s capacity by 100%, to reach 16 lanes.” One thousand vehicles per hour in both directions.

Project details

The project included the development of four intersections, the first of which was the intersection of Hessa Street with Sheikh Zayed Road, where a bridged ramp was implemented: (Ramp Directional), with a capacity of two lanes, passing over the route of the Dubai Metro Red Line, and serving traffic heading right from Sheikh Zayed Road to Hessa Street to the east, towards Emirates Road. The second included developing the intersection of Hessa Street with First Al Khail Road, by increasing the number of lanes on the existing bridge of Hessa Street, from three lanes to four lanes in each direction, and implementing irrigated improvements to the road. The project also included developing the intersection of Hessa Street with Al Asayel Street, and included increasing the number of lanes on the current bridge from two lanes in each direction to four lanes in each direction along Hessa Street through the implementation of a new bridge parallel to the existing bridge, and implementing traffic improvements on the surface intersection controlled by a light signal. As for the fourth intersection, it included developing the intersection of Hessa Street with Al Khail Street, where a direct bridge link (Ramp Directional) was implemented, serving traffic heading from Hessa Street. To Al Khail Street north towards Sharjah, with a capacity of two lanes, with the implementation of new additional bridges at the existing intersection above Al Khail Street, serving traffic from Hessa Street to Al Khail Street towards Deira.

The second stage

The Authority recently began implementing the work of the second phase of the Hessa Street development project, from its intersection with Al Khail Street to its intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, with a length of 3 kilometers, and includes developing three main intersections, by implementing bridges with a length of 8,835 meters and a tunnel with a length of 480 meters, and developing the entrances and exits of a number of streets, which will contribute to increasing the capacity by 100%, as it will increase from 4,000 vehicles per hour, to 8,000 vehicles per hour. The project serves 10 residential and development areas. It also contributes to reducing travel time from 24 minutes to five minutes. The number of beneficiaries is estimated at about 650,000 people. The second phase of the development of Hessa Street contributes to providing direct traffic between Al Khail and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Streets.

The volume of traffic on the streets, covered by the second phase, is estimated at about half a million trips per day, and the development work will contribute to increasing the capacity of the roads by 100%, as it will increase from 4,000 vehicles per hour in each direction, to 8,000 vehicles per hour in each direction. It will also contribute to reducing the travel time from 24 minutes to five minutes, indicating that the project serves 10 residential and development areas, the most important of which are Jumeirah Village Circle, Arjan, Dubai Science Park, Al Barsha South, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Jumeirah Islands, Barsha Heights, The Greens, and Emirates Hills, and the number of beneficiaries of the project is estimated at about 650,000 people.
