A hot dog meal from the street…an unfulfilled wish of the Brazilian President in Germany

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz fulfilled a special wish for Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva during the latter’s visit to Germany. However, the fulfillment of the Brazilian president’s wish was only partially fulfilled, as Lula was presented with the sausage he had requested before his trip, but not from a food cart in the streets of Hanover as he had hoped.
Before leaving Brazil, Lula had revealed his desire to Merz in an interview with Stern magazine, where he said: “I told him that when I travel to Germany, I would like to eat sausages from a street food cart.” Lula added: “The last time I was in (former Chancellor) Angela Merkel’s office, I ate a sausage I bought from a kiosk. When I’m abroad, I try to try local foods.”
Merz complied, and before a celebratory lunch at Herrnhausen Palace in Hanover, ordered his guest to be served “a selection of special sausages,” a government spokesman said. The palace kitchen chef prepared, among other dishes, curry beef sausages, rough beef sausages, and grilled sausages.
However, Lula expressed his disappointment during the joint press conference with Meretz, where he said: “The only thing I regret is that I did not pass any street where there was a cart selling grilled sausages.” He added: “I did not see a single (cart), so I will leave Hanover without eating sausages from the cart, and without the sausages that I love so much.” Then he added, addressing Merz: “Maybe you can bring me a meal of grilled sausages when you come to Brazil.”
