Masdar and Scottish Power achieve a record by installing the first wind turbine with the largest blades of its kind in the United Kingdom.

Masdar and Scottish Power have achieved a record in the offshore wind energy sector in the United Kingdom, by installing the first wind turbine within the “East Anglia 3” project, which includes blades measuring 115 meters in length, making it the first of its kind in the United Kingdom, as each blade is longer than the length of a football field. All 285 blades for the project’s 95 turbines are being manufactured at Siemens Gamesa’s plant in Hull, UK.

The height of the 14 MW turbines is about 262 metres, which is greater than the height of the observation deck in The Shard tower, and its rotor diameter reaches 236 metres. Just one cycle of a single turbine can generate enough energy to power a UK home for more than four days, charge about 1,700 mobile phones, or make nearly a thousand cups of tea. Scottish Power Renewables CEO, Charlie Jordan, said: “The installation of the largest and first blade wind turbine of its kind in the UK is a significant achievement for Scottish Power, Iberdrola and Masdar, as we continue to work together to accelerate the deployment of local renewable energy solutions at scale.

He stressed that the “East Anglia 3” project will be the largest offshore wind station and the most energy producing within the company’s portfolio, and will contribute to pumping billions of pounds of investments into supply chains within the United Kingdom and at the global level, and provide thousands of job opportunities during the construction phase, in addition to providing more than a hundred permanent jobs in the east of England, and enhancing energy security by supplying the network with larger and unprecedented quantities of clean electricity. Scottish Power Renewables CEO, Charlie Jordan, added that this achievement reflects the success of the strategic partnership and investment cooperation with Masdar, in addition to the dedication and excellence of the company’s work team and partners in the supply chains, pointing out that the East Anglia 3 station will play an important role in shaping the future of clean energy in the United Kingdom.

The East Anglia 3 station is located off the coast of Suffolk, United Kingdom, and when it is operational, it will be one of the largest offshore wind power stations in the world, providing clean energy to 1.3 million homes in Britain. The turbine blades used in the East Anglia III project are seven meters longer than the previous record of 108 metres, also manufactured by Siemens Gamesa.
