Emirates Global Aluminum acquires a majority stake in Italian aluminum recycling company EcoGreen

Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the UAE outside the oil and gas sector and the largest producer of high-quality aluminum in the world, announced today its intention to acquire 80% of the shares of the Italian aluminum recycling company EcoGreen.

This deal is considered the latest step in the company’s strategic plan for global expansion and accelerating the growth of its aluminum recycling business in Europe.

The acquisition strengthens the company’s capabilities in the aluminum scrap market in Europe directly for the first time, and the deal is subject to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals.

Eco Green specializes in aluminum scrap, sorting and casting, and treating slag, one of the types of waste resulting from smelting operations. The company distributes 70 thousand tons annually.

EcoGreen owns a factory in Villafranca di Verona in northeastern Italy, which collects, sorts and distributes about 23,000 tons of aluminum scrap annually.

Some of the sorted scrap is supplied to a neighboring EcoGreen facility in Nogara di Verona, which produces more than 20,000 tons of secondary scrap annually.

EcoGreen is implementing an expansion plan in Nogara di Verona, which will contribute to increasing its production by 15,000 tons annually of secondary aluminum, and it is expected to be completed at the beginning of the second half of 2026.

EcoGreen provides its services to more than 60 customers across Europe, most of whom are in the aluminum manufacturing and processing sector, and their products serve the automotive, aviation, construction and other industrial sectors. It has established a strong scrap supply network that includes more than 350 suppliers, ensuring the availability of a regular supply of high-quality aluminum scrap.

The company was founded by the Scabini family in 1993, and is still managed by family members. Its team includes 70 employees, and the current management team is expected to remain with the company after the completion of the deal.

Emirates Global Aluminum owns the largest aluminum recycling plant in the Emirates in the Al Taweelah area in Abu Dhabi. The company acquired aluminum recycling assets in Germany and the United States in 2024, and is currently working on expansion projects in both companies.

After completing the acquisition of EcoGreen, EGA’s recycled aluminum production capacity will rise to more than 400,000 tons annually in the UAE, Europe, and the United States, in addition to more than 200,000 tons annually of additional production capacity that is currently being developed through existing projects in the United States and Europe. The company markets recycled aluminum globally under the “Revival” brand.

The CEO of Emirates Global Aluminum, Abdul Nasser Bin Kalban, said that the company is making rapid progress in establishing an integrated global business base for aluminum recycling, in parallel with enhancing its production of primary aluminum, pointing out that Eco Green has extensive experience that will contribute, after the completion of the deal, to supporting the expansion of Emirates Global Aluminium, in the aluminum scrap market in the region, and strengthening its role as an active partner in building a low-carbon future in Europe.

He added that this deal enables Emirates Global Aluminium, to produce recycled aluminum in northeastern Italy, and opens new horizons for the growth of its business.

For his part, Eco Green’s CEO, Luca Scabini, said that joining the largest producer of high-quality aluminum in the world represents a turning point in Eco Green’s journey, as it helps the company strengthen its industrial operations, expand its aluminum scrap supply chains, and consolidate its presence in European markets. He pointed out that Emirates Global Aluminum is one of the most prominent companies in the primary aluminum market in Europe, looking forward to supporting and expanding its business in the field of recycling on the continent level.

According to analyses, global demand for recycled aluminum will double by 2040. Recycled aluminum is expected to contribute to the growth of global aluminum supplies by 60% by 2030, and by 70% between 2030 and 2040.

Europe, excluding Russia, is the third largest market for recycled aluminum globally after the United States and China.

Recycled aluminum currently meets about 40% of total European demand, with consumption of about 4.9 million tons annually in 2025.

European demand for recycled aluminum is expected to reach 7.2 million tons annually by 2033, according to the Foundation. CRU Independent and specialized in corporate research and data.

Emirates Global Aluminum acquired the German company Leichtmetall, which specializes in the manufacture of alloys, in May 2024.

Liechtmetall, a subsidiary of Emirates Global Aluminium, headquartered in Hannover, is a European smelter specializing in the recycling of high-strength aluminium.

In December 2025, Emirates Global Aluminum announced an expansion project to increase the smelter’s recycling production capacity by more than six-fold, by increasing scrap sorting capabilities by about 110,000 tons annually, and smelting and casting capabilities by 153,000 tons annually. The value of investments for this project is approximately 170 million US dollars, and the facility is expected to begin production operations by 2028.

Emirates Global Aluminum is a major supplier of primary aluminum to Europe, with more than 600,000 tons annually exported from the UAE to European markets, used in various industrial sectors, including automobiles and construction.

In September 2024, EGA acquired Spectro Alloys, a recycling company based in Minnesota, United States.

Spectro Alloys, a subsidiary of Emirates Global Aluminium, completed the expansion project in July 2025, bringing its total production capacity to 165,000 tons annually of recycled aluminum ingots and cylinders. Work is currently underway on the second phase of the expansion, which will increase the production capacity of aluminum cylinders by 35 thousand tons, and production is expected to begin in 2027.

In the UAE, Emirates Global Aluminum began producing molten aluminum at its new recycling plant in Al Taweelah in February 2026, with a production capacity of 185,000 tons annually.

The factory is currently closed as a result of Iranian missile and drone attacks on the Khalifa Economic Zone – Kizad.

The recycling process requires 95% less energy than the energy consumed to produce primary aluminum, and results in a minimal amount of emissions compared to producing aluminum from raw bauxite.
