Research collaboration between"Abu Dhabi Ports" and New York University Abu Dhabi to enhance the efficiency of port operations

ABU DHABI, April 23 / WAM / Abu Dhabi Ports Group announced today the signing of a strategic partnership agreement for research cooperation with New York University Abu Dhabi, under which opportunities to adopt the latest advanced digital technologies will be explored.
This partnership extends for several years, and aims to develop and test a high-accuracy intelligence engine that provides probabilistic models and spatial analyses, and supports human cadres in making decisions, ensuring the highest degree of accuracy in predicting ship arrival times and improving mechanisms for allocating sea berths, while integrating environmental dimensions as an essential element in decision-making with high accuracy.
The initiative provides innovative solutions to reduce waiting times for ships in docking areas in ports, which extend globally for several days. The new engine aims to increase the efficiency of proactive planning and ensure smooth movement in ports.
It is expected that this system will result in a more intelligent management of ship docking operations, which will increase the capacity of the stations without the need for construction expansions.
On the environmental level, aligning arrival times with the allocation of berths allows for reducing downtime and fuel consumption, which reduces the environmental impact and supports the group’s move towards enhancing the sustainability of operations.
Mohammed Jamal Al-Din, CEO of Digital and Information Affairs – Abu Dhabi Ports Group, said that digital innovations and strategic partnerships represent the basic pillar of the group’s vision to reimagine the global logistics services system, as the group continues its efforts to support global trade by integrating its deep operational expertise with advanced forecasting models, thus laying the foundations for a future based on self-decision support systems.
He added that through cooperation with New York University Abu Dhabi, the group is ensuring that the move towards predictive accuracy is taking place in a solid and responsible manner, giving its partners around the world the confidence necessary to face the challenges of the global trade scene.
The joint initiative aims to transform operational variables into reliable data, and enhance the transparency of efforts to reduce carbon emissions in stations, to form an integrated digital platform to support operational and environmental decisions.
As part of the long-term commitment of both parties to digital development, plans will be developed to pilot this initiative in a number of the group’s stations and commercial corridors, and then disseminate the successful results and expand their scope across the group’s global network.
For his part, Arlie Peters, Dean of NYU Abu Dhabi, said that NYU Abu Dhabi’s focus is on conducting research that has a tangible impact in facing real challenges, while the partnership embodies the strategic ambitions of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and emphasizes the UAE’s leadership in the fields of trade and infrastructure.
He explained that the university aims, through this partnership, to link scientific research and field application to consolidate the country’s position as a global logistics center.
This project is supervised by Professor Ali Diabat, from the Department of Civil and Urban Engineering, and the work is based on creating solutions based on data analysis, with the aim of making more accurate and effective decisions and improving long-term operational performance in the ports and logistics services sector.
The partnership represents a strong complementarity that combines academic expertise and operational reach, with NYU Abu Dhabi providing world-class analytical and research capabilities, ensuring the scientific rigor necessary for high-resolution modeling.
Abu Dhabi Ports Group, within the framework of its data governance controls, will provide secure access to relevant operational information, and facilitate the implementation of realistic and controlled application experiments across its relevant terminals and commercial corridors, which will contribute to employing this high-precision engine within actual operational environments.
