Al Habtoor Group officially initiates international arbitration procedures against the Republic of Lebanon

Al Habtoor Group, represented by the international law firm White & Case, confirmed that it has officially initiated international arbitration proceedings against the Republic of Lebanon, in accordance with the applicable bilateral investment agreement.
The group reported that the arbitration request was submitted, accompanied by comprehensive supporting documents, through the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes in Washington, D.C., and the Lebanese Republic was officially notified, in accordance with the approved procedures.
The Al Habtoor Group explained that “this measure comes after a prolonged period of continuous efforts that it made in good faith to reach an amicable solution,” stressing that it has completely exhausted efforts to reach an amicable solution without achieving any substantive or constructive result.
The group pointed out that its investments in Lebanon were made based on the legal and regulatory framework of the state, and by relying on the protection provided by international agreements. However, the “group” incurred significant losses and damages as a result of these investments, as a result of a set of measures taken by the Lebanese Republic over a long period of time, in addition to its failure to provide the necessary protection for the group’s investments.
The Al Habtoor Group stressed that the start of these procedures reflects a clear and deliberate decision to move forward in using all available legal measures to protect its rights, and to seek full compensation through the relevant international legal channels, stressing that it will pursue this path with determination and discipline.
