The winds of impeachment are blowing early, and the Democrats are preparing a file to oust Trump on the first day of 2027.

A report published by Axios revealed a proactive political move within the corridors of the US Congress, where a group of Democratic representatives is leading an intense movement to collect evidence and build an integrated legal case with the aim of isolating President Donald Trump. This step comes in preparation for launching a vote on impeachment on “day one” if the Democratic Party regains control of the House of Representatives in January 2027.
The report indicated that there was a radical shift in the position of the Democratic Party. After the idea of impeachment was ruled out and rejected by the majority of party representatives following the 2024 elections, support for this step increased significantly. This transformation was evident in the increase in the number of representatives supporting the impeachment decisions from 78 to 140 representatives late last year.
Growing popular support
A recent poll conducted by Stream in Numbers/Verasight showed that 55% of American adults support the House of Representatives’ vote to impeach Trump, compared to 37% who oppose it. Statisticians liken this difference (+18) to the levels of support that preceded the resignation of President Richard Nixon during the Watergate scandal in 1974.
Shadow sessions strategy
Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.) told Axios that the party needs a “concrete, coordinated strategy” that includes holding shadow hearings and fact-checking now, to ensure it is fully prepared for a potential return to power.
Representative Yasmine Ansari (Democrat from Arizona) confirmed in her statement to the website that if the House of Representatives is restored, the rush to pass the impeachment resolution will be “overwhelming.”
Despite this momentum, Axios reported moderate voices within the party warning against being drawn into political battles that may not bear fruit. Representative Brad Schneider pointed to the constitutional challenge represented by the necessity of obtaining a two-thirds majority in the Senate to complete the conviction, stressing the importance of directing efforts towards strengthening national security and improving the daily living of the American citizen.
With mounting calls to expand the circle of accountability to include other officials, it seems that the coming months will witness a fierce political battle behind the scenes, as the opposition movement within the Democratic Party refuses to wait until 2027 to begin its movements.
