World leaders express shock after shooting at White House press dinner

Today, Sunday, leaders from around the world expressed their shock over the attack that occurred last night at a press dinner attended by US President Donald Trump, in Washington, DC, and their relief after the arrest of the suspect.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he felt “very relieved” that President Trump, the First Lady and all those who were present were safe.

He wrote on the “X” platform: “I am shocked by what happened last night at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington… Any attack on democratic institutions or on freedom of the press must be condemned in the strongest terms.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who was one of the first to comment on the tragic events in the American capital, also expressed his satisfaction with everyone’s safety.

He wrote on the X platform: “There is no place for political violence in any democracy, and my sympathies are with all those affected by this disturbing incident.”

For her part, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum posted a message of condolence on the “X” platform, saying: “Violence should never be the solution.”

In a related development, French President Emmanuel Macron described the attack as “unacceptable,” while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that “there is no place for violence in politics, ever.”

The European Union’s foreign policy official, Kaya Kallas, confirmed this opinion, writing: “An event for the purpose of honoring press freedom should never turn into a theater of fear,” wishing the Secret Service officer a “speedy recovery.”

The attack was also condemned by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who is one of the harshest critics of the US-Israeli war on Iran in Europe.

“Violence is never a solution,” he wrote. “Humanity will only advance through democracy, coexistence and peace.”

For his part, outgoing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, another close ally of Trump, said he was “disturbed” by the news of the shooting, adding that “there is no room for violence in politics!”
