Military spending reaches a record high in 2025.. How much did the major countries spend?

Global military spending rose during the year 2025 to a record level of $2.89 trillion, driven by huge European spending, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
The institute indicated in a report published today, Monday, that Major rearmament programs in Asia also contributed to an increase in global defense spending for the 11th consecutive year in 2025.
The report showed that global military spending as a share of GDP rose to 2.5%, its highest level since 2009.
The United States remained the largest country in terms of defense spending in the world, with spending reaching $954 billion. As for China, the second largest country, it increased its spending by 7.4%, reaching an estimated $336 billion. Some experts believe that the actual number spent by China may be much higher, given that Beijing does not fully disclose its military spending.
Europe and NATO was the main driver of the increase in global military spending, rising by 14% to $864 billion.
Apart from Russia, Germany was the largest country in the region in terms of military spending, with its spending rising by 24% compared to last year to reach $114 billion.
Spain’s military spending jumped by 50% to $40.2 billion, raising its defense expenditures above 2% of GDP Total.
While Global defense spending to grow The growth rate slowed to 2.9% in 2025, much lower than the 9.7% increase in 2024. This is mainly due to a 7.5% decrease in US military spending after no new financial aid was approved for Ukraine during that year.
