The UAE welcomes the decision of the FAO Council to condemn Iran for disrupting global food and agricultural supply chains

The UAE welcomed the resolution adopted by the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), during a special session of the Council, as part of an initiative led by the UAE in cooperation with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and its partners, which includes condemning Iran for its actions that endanger food security.
The resolution addresses the repercussions on global food security and agriculture resulting from Iran’s targeting of vital facilities, such as power plants, water desalination, and food facilities, which leads to the disruption of supply chains in the Gulf region, including vital sea lanes.
The UAE worked on this resolution, along with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon and Morocco, and it was adopted unanimously.
The UAE expresses its appreciation to all Council members and participating sponsors for their constructive interaction in advancing this initiative within the organization’s mandate.
The resolution stresses the urgent need to prevent the politicization of food and agricultural supply chains and protect global food security, especially for the most vulnerable countries that depend on food imports.
It also stresses that safe and predictable flows of food, fertilizer and agricultural inputs — supported by open and efficient trade corridors — are essential to stabilizing global markets and protecting affected populations.
Referring to UN Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026) — co-sponsored by 136 countries — the FAO resolution affirms that the attacks carried out by Iran against countries in the region and beyond, including unprovoked attacks on civilian infrastructure and on commercial ships, and the disruptions they cause to international navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, constitute a violation of international law and a serious threat to international peace and security.
It also highlights that these attacks disrupt the production, transportation and supply of food and agricultural commodities, contributing to global market volatility and rising food prices.
Abdullah Al-Alaa, Assistant Secretary of State for Energy and Sustainability Affairs, noted that the safety of global food and energy supply chains cannot be separated from the security of vital sea routes.
He stressed that the Iranian escalation and its actions targeting vital civilian infrastructure have far-reaching repercussions that lead to destabilization in the region and the world, and directly affect the markets and most vulnerable population groups around the world. He stressed the need for the international community to move collectively to support international law, ensure freedom of navigation, and protect the continuous flow of basic commodities that support global food security.
The resolution also stresses the importance of maintaining open, safe and efficient trade corridors, including international waterways, and ensuring freedom of navigation to ensure the continuous flow of food, agricultural goods, fertilizers and basic inputs, in order to maintain market stability and protect the most vulnerable groups.
The resolution also stipulates that the FAO must, within the framework of its mandate, monitor and evaluate the impact of disturbances in the Strait of Hormuz and other passages on global food security, provide timely market information and early warnings, and support Member States – upon their request – in strengthening the resilience of their food and agricultural systems, including by providing technical guidance and coordination with relevant partners.
The UAE confirms that the Strait of Hormuz represents a vital international waterway and a true global artery, essential for the flow of energy, trade and vital goods globally. About one-fifth of the global energy supply passes through it daily, along with about 25% of global gas flows, approximately 70% of petrochemical needs, and about 30% of the fertilizers needed for global food production.
The UAE remains committed to active and constructive engagement within the Food and Agriculture Organization to enhance international cooperation, strengthen the stability of food systems, and put an end to Iranian violations that undermine global food security, including those that affect freedom of navigation.
