A horrific school shooting in Brazil
A horrific shooting incident inside a school, the day before yesterday, in the state of Acre, northern Brazil, resulted in the death of two women and the injury of two other people, including a student, according to what the authorities announced.
The state government said that a 13-year-old student confessed to carrying out the attack inside a public school called “São José Institute” in the city of Rio Branco, the state capital. The authorities explained that the two victims were two employees of the school, and they died at the scene of the incident, while an employee and a student were injured by gunshots and were taken to the hospital for treatment. The authorities did not reveal the identities of the victims. The police said that the suspect was arrested, and that he used a firearm that belonged to a member of his family who was his legal guardian.
Local media reported that the weapon belonged to the teenager’s stepfather, who was also arrested.
“The state expresses its deep solidarity with the families of the victims, the school community at the São José Institute, and all workers in the education sector affected by this incident,” said Acre State Governor, Milza Assis.
She indicated that psychological support teams were mobilized to provide assistance to students and teachers, and classes were suspended for three days in all schools across the state, in line with the security protocol that came into effect following the incident.
