Sri Lanka raises electricity prices by 18% as fuel costs rise

Colombo, 9 May / WAM / KBL Chandralal, Chairman of the Public Utilities Authority of Sri Lanka, announced today that his country intends to increase electricity prices by 18%, effective from midnight next night.

The decision excludes small families and small business owners, due to the high costs of importing fuel, according to Bloomberg News Agency.

Bloomberg quoted Chandralal as saying in statements to reporters today that the electricity company expects generation costs to rise by 38 billion rupees until September 2026.

A monthly consumption limit of 180 units has been set for customers excluded from this tariff increase.

For its part, the Treasury pledged to provide support worth 15 billion rupees, which will be used to avoid raising tariffs on small users.

The electricity company was also directed to prepare a generation plan aimed at phasing out the use of liquid fuels by 2030.
