9.4 billion dirhams in financing "Abu Dhabi Fund for Development" For strategic projects in Jordan

ABU DHABI, May 24 / WAM / The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development continues its pioneering role in supporting the development process in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan by financing strategic projects worth more than 9.4 billion dirhams since 1974, which included vital sectors that contributed to enhancing economic and social growth and improving the quality of life.

The projects funded by the Fund highlighted the depth of the Emirati-Jordanian partnership through qualitative initiatives that included the Jordanian Digital Health Center “Virtual Hospital”, the grain storage silo expansion project in Juwaida and Aqaba, the Amman Development Road, the Sheikh Zayed Solar Energy Park in Al Quwairah, in addition to the Kafranja Dam project, including support for the health, food security, renewable energy, water and infrastructure sectors.

These projects reflect the UAE’s commitment to supporting sustainable development in Jordan and establishing an Arab model based on partnership and integration, which contributes to enhancing economic and social stability and opening new development horizons that serve communities and support the future of future generations.

His Excellency Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, said in statements to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, that the UAE and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan are linked by deep-rooted historical relations based on brotherhood, common visions, and extended cooperation in various fields, stressing that the Fund has contributed over decades to supporting the development process in Jordan by financing strategic projects that have enhanced economic and social growth, which embodies the depth of the partnership between the two countries.

He added that the UAE, through the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, managed its contribution within the Gulf Fund for Development program to support development projects in Jordan, amounting to 4.6 billion dirhams, to finance strategic projects in the sectors of health, energy, water, transportation, food security and education, noting that approximately 4.459 billion dirhams of this funding had been distributed by the end of 2016.

In the health sector, the Jordanian Digital Health Center “Virtual Hospital” project emerged, which was launched in 2024 with funding from an Emirati grant within the Jordanian government’s economic modernization program, with the aim of unifying health records through a digital platform linking hospitals and health centers. During the first phase, five hospitals and three health centers were linked to improve the quality of health care and accelerate access to medical services.

The project is being implemented in cooperation with BriSight as part of the digital transformation project in the Jordanian Ministry of Health, worth $100 million, which reflects the two countries’ orientation towards employing advanced technology in developing health services.

Within the framework of supporting food security, the Fund financed the expansion project of grain storage silos in the Juwaida and Aqaba regions at a value of 258.7 million dirhams, equivalent to $70.5 million. The project contributed to increasing the storage capacity of the Juwaida silos by 120,000 tons to reach 250,000 tons, and the Aqaba silos by 100,000 tons to reach 200,000 tons, in support of the Jordanian National Strategy for Food Security for the year 2025.

In the infrastructure sector, the Fund financed the Amman Development Road Project, one of the most prominent vital transportation projects in Jordan, because of its importance in enhancing the efficiency of connectivity between the capital, Amman, and the various governorates and regional border crossings.

In the renewable energy sector, in 2013, the Fund financed the Sheikh Zayed Solar Energy Park project in the Al-Quwairah region in southern Jordan at a value of 551 million dirhams. The park produces 103 megawatts of energy using solar cells, and contributes to meeting the growing demand for electricity through clean and sustainable energy sources.

The project provides electrical energy to more than 50,000 homes, and also contributes to reducing dependence on imported energy and reducing the costs of importing petroleum derivatives.

In the water sector, the Kafranja Dam is one of the vital projects supported by the Fund. It is a rocky aggregate dam with a height of 80 meters and a storage capacity of 7 million cubic meters, of which 4 million cubic meters were allocated for agricultural purposes, allowing the development of an additional 6 thousand dunums and increasing agricultural production.

The dam also supplies Ajloun Governorate with about 3 million cubic meters of drinking water annually, and contributes to reducing the risk of floods and enhancing the water resources available for irrigation and drinking purposes and developing the surrounding environment.

In terms of supporting trade and exports, the Abu Dhabi Export Office (ADEX) strengthened economic cooperation between the UAE and Jordan by signing a financing agreement with Capital Bank to open a line of credit worth approximately 73.4 million dirhams, equivalent to 20 million US dollars, with the aim of supporting commercial activity and enabling Emirati exporters to access the Jordanian market by providing financing and appropriate guarantees.

The extended Emirati-Jordanian partnership embodies the depth of brotherly relations that are translated into major development projects that include various vital sectors, while the UAE and Jordan, with Abu Dhabi Fund for Development’s financing in the Kingdom exceeding 9.4 billion dirhams until 2026, continue to consolidate an Arab development model based on effective partnership and investment in the future of societies, whether through developing infrastructure, providing sustainable energy, enhancing food and water security, or improving the quality of health care and education, which reflects a common vision for achieving comprehensive development and supporting stability and prosperity in the region.
