المملكة: Mecca.. 843 oversight visits and 75 specialized tours of slaughterhouses and high-risk facilities during the Hajj season


Upload Hajj season, which extends from 1 to 12 Dhu al-Hijjah, more than 843 oversight visits to facilities with an environmental impact, including 75 specialized visits that targeted high-risk facilities, including slaughterhouses, sacrificial sites, sewage plants, and engineering dumps.

He indicated that the oversight tours included more than 8 facilities for slaughterhouses and sacrifices, in addition to two sewage plants and engineering dumps, within the center’s plans. To monitor the extent of compliance with environmental requirements and reduce any potential impacts on the environment and public health during the season.

Continuous monitoring

For his part, the Director of Inspection at the National Center for Environmental Compliance Control, Abdullah Al-Ayouni, confirmed that slaughterhouse activity is one of the regulatory targeted activities during the Hajj season, due to the high operational capacity and the accompanying large quantities of liquid and solid waste resulting from the slaughter of sacrifices.

He indicated that the Center is continuously monitoring safe disposal operations. Of these wastes according to the approved environmental requirements, as they are among the activities with a high environmental impact as a result of increased operational loads during the days of Hajj.

He added that the environmental study of the Modern Units slaughterhouse complex in Mecca showed that the operational capacity of the complex reaches about 370 thousand heads in just four days, within an operational system subject to continuous environmental control, which includes field monitoring of air quality, noise levels, and waste management mechanisms.

He explained that liquid waste is collected. Inside designated tanks according to approved specifications before being transported to treatment sites, while solid waste is transported via conveyor belts to be collected and disposed of in regular ways inside or outside the facility, thus limiting any potential environmental impacts during the season.

Al-Ayouni confirmed that the center also reviews emergency and occupational safety plans and environmental management plans inside slaughterhouses, to ensure that facilities adhere to environmental standards and achieve the highest levels of compliance in the holy sites.
