The United States imposes new sanctions on Iran’s oil and petrochemical networks

New York, May 30 / WAM / The United States announced, on Friday, the imposition of a new package of sanctions on Iranian oil and petrochemical networks, as part of a “maximum pressure” campaign aimed at depriving Iran of the sources of revenue it uses to finance its military and regional activities.

US State Department spokesman Thomas “Tommy” Piggott said that the new measures target “Iran’s illicit oil economy” and include entities, individuals and ships that the US administration considers to be the backbone of operations for transporting Iranian oil and petrochemical products.

The statement explained that the sanctions imposed by the US State Department included eight entities listed on the sanctions lists, in addition to classifying eight ships as prohibited property due to their participation in transporting Iranian oil and petrochemical products, and also affected three entities and an individual linked to the trade in these products.

Yesterday, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on other major parties within a network that sells Iranian oil, which transported millions of barrels of oil worth billions of dollars through companies based in Hong Kong that handle storage, transportation and sales operations.

Washington revealed that these networks directly contribute to financing the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, and provide financial resources used in “destabilizing activities” in the Middle East.

The statement stressed that the United States will not hesitate to take action against any party or entity that participates in the illegal Iranian oil trade or supports the Iranian government’s ability to attack its neighbors and its people, warning that any cooperation in the Iranian energy sector may expose its owners to American sanctions.

The statement also indicated that the “Rewards for Justice” program continues to offer a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to the disruption of the financial mechanisms of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and its branches.
