Al-Sharaa discussed with Trump by phone ways to support the Syrian economy and developments in the situation in the region

The Syrian presidency said, on Sunday, that President Ahmed al-Sharaa discussed by phone with US President Donald Trump ways to support the Syrian economy and developments in the situation in the region. The presidency stated in a statement that Al-Sharaa indicated during the call that lifting the remaining sanctions represents an essential step to enable the Syrian economy to regain its activity, improve the living conditions of citizens, and encourage investments.
The United States stated that some sanctions are still in place despite ending most of the sanctions regime on Syria and repealing the Caesar Act, which imposed broad measures on individuals, companies, and institutions linked to former President Bashar al-Assad.
Washington says that the sanctions will continue to target Assad and those close to him, as well as people it accuses of violating human rights, Captagon pill smugglers, and other parties that the United States considers destabilizing the region.
The United States explained that it is reviewing the classification of Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism, a classification that imposes restrictions on US foreign aid, defense exports, and some financial transactions.
Lifting remaining sanctions is widely seen as key to the success of the new government in Syria. Several Saudi companies intend to pump billions of dollars in investments into Syria as part of Riyadh’s efforts to support the recovery of Damascus, while other Gulf countries have also pledged to provide financial aid.
