The Romanian president chooses his advisor to lead a technocratic government

Romanian President Nikocor Dan on Thursday nominated European Parliament member Eugene Tomac for the position of Prime Minister, in an attempt to resolve the political crisis.

The move comes a month after the ouster of pro-European reformist Prime Minister Elie Bologan in a parliamentary vote of no confidence.

Tomac, a politician affiliated with the conservative People’s Movement party that is not represented in the Romanian parliament, also works as an unpaid advisor to President Dan.

If approved, he will lead a government made up of mostly technocrats.

Tomac said he would present to lawmakers a government that is “technocratic, not political.”

The opposition Social Democratic Party, the largest party in parliament, had already expressed its support for Tomac ahead of his nomination.

However, George Simeon, leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians, the second largest parliamentary bloc, said that his party would not vote for Tomac under any circumstances.
