Uzbekistan begins construction of its first nuclear power plant at a cost of $9.5 billion
Tashkent, June 6, 2017 – Construction work on the first nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan has begun, according to the Information Office of the Uzbek Presidency.
The launch ceremony was held via video technology, linking the construction site in central Uzbekistan to the Russian city of Saint Petersburg, where Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Russian President Vladimir Putin jointly issued the order to begin construction of the first unit of the station.
Mirziyoyev said that the station will contribute significantly to the country’s electricity generation, once it operates at its full design capacity.
The presidential media office confirmed to Uzbekistan that the construction work of the station and the necessary equipment for its operation are being carried out in accordance with the standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
For his part, Azim Ahmadkhadjayev, head of the Agency for Atomic Energy Development in Uzbekistan (UZATOM), explained that the basic cost of the project is estimated at about 9.5 billion US dollars.
