The Federal Nuclear Regulation Authority reviews the development of the nuclear and radiation system in the Emirates

The Board of Directors of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation held its periodic meeting and reviewed a number of regulatory developments and strategic priorities related to developing the nuclear and radiation regulatory system in the UAE.

The Board of Directors reviewed the results of the recent visit made by the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, to the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, where he praised the UAE’s peaceful nuclear program and its commitment to applying the best standards of nuclear safety and security, transparency and international cooperation.

Grossi also highlighted the speed, effectiveness and transparency of the UAE in dealing with the accident at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, praising the professionalism and capabilities of the response team, which reflects the flexibility and strength of the response system in the UAE.

Grossi stressed the importance of protecting nuclear facilities from any threats or attacks in accordance with international principles and standards.

The Board of Directors of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation noted that the visit contributed to strengthening international confidence in the UAE’s nuclear regulatory framework, and highlighted the depth of the ongoing partnership and cooperation between the country and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Board of Directors also reviewed the latest operational developments for the four units at the Barakah station, including fueling programs and planned periodic maintenance work.

The Authority continues to implement field inspection and monitoring programs to verify the operator’s compliance with regulatory requirements and ensure continued operations at the station.

The members of the Council were briefed on the latest developments in the preparation of the regulations for implementing fines and administrative penalties against individuals and entities subject to the provisions of Federal Decree Law No. (6) of 2009 regarding the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, which contributes to enhancing the effectiveness of supervisory tasks and the transparency of the Authority in performing its tasks in monitoring the nuclear and radiological sector.

In the context of enhancing national and international cooperation, the Board of Directors approved a number of memorandums of understanding and agreements to be concluded during the year 2026, covering the areas of nuclear and radiation safety, nuclear security, and readiness to deal with emergency situations, in addition to research and development initiatives. These partnerships continue their pivotal role in supporting the exchange of experiences, enhancing supervisory capabilities, and consolidating international best practices.

The Board of Directors also approved the Authority’s annual report for the year 2025, which documents the most prominent activities, achievements and regulatory milestones witnessed during the year.
