The Indus River passes through very sensitive demarcation lines between India and Pakistan in Kashmir, the Muslim-majority region that has been the focus of a dispute between the two countries since it was divided between them upon their independence from British rule in 1947. The Water Treaty provided a rare channel for diplomatic engagement between the two sides until India suspended its membership in it in May 2025, following a bloody attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir. The two neighbors then engaged in fierce fighting that lasted four days, in which both sides used drones, missiles, and artillery, resulting in the deaths of at least about 70 people on both sides.
