"European Council": Agreement on the European Union budget is linked to agreement on new taxes
Brussels, June 11 / WAM / Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, said that it is not possible to reach an agreement on the long-term, multi-year budget coming to the European Union this year without an agreement on new taxes at the Union level, in a message he addressed to the leaders of the European Union countries.
In his letter, Costa called on the leaders, who will meet in Brussels next week on June 18 and 19, to continue working on a seven-year European Union budget proposal worth approximately 2 trillion euros.
He said: “We must focus our discussion on the key elements to facilitate reaching an agreement by the end of the year, and this includes making progress on new private resources, which will be crucial to meeting our ambitions with the necessary means.”
