EU begins membership talks for Ukraine and Moldova

The European Union begins formal accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova tomorrow, after Hungary dropped its objections. Cyprus, which holds the rotating presidency of the bloc, announced the day before yesterday that member states had agreed to a certain position regarding the first phase of the negotiations, thus completing the necessary preparations.

The European Union officially began membership negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova in June 2024, but the opening of the first phase of talks with Kiev was disrupted by Hungary using its veto power. The situation did not change until the electoral defeat suffered by former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in April, and then the process began to move forward again.
